For those of you who didn't live with me Junior year of college, first off, count yourselves lucky.
But the point of this post is that my sister just pieced together the foggy memories I have of the turtle I had at college.
Apparently, my sister "liberated" this turtle from a pet store in Ohio where she suspected the kids working there were smoking pot. She then came out to visit (probably over Thanksgiving), and left the turtle--then named Raptor, rechristened Gamera--behind.
I have memories of being woefully ill informed about turtle care, dropping the poor reptile on numerous occasions, and feeding it whatever I appropriated from the dining hall, but I could not for the life of me remember how the story ended and just assumed that I managed to kill the poor bugger through neglect and zany drunken antics.
But no! It seems as though I managed to keep it alive in spite of my complete inability to properly care for myself, much less a poor defenseless animal, as Meg tells me that Gamera was adopted by a classroom at the school where my Dad was teaching at the time.
So Hooray! My cancer is not punishment for animal abuse! Between that revelation, and the crapload of fantastic baby/kids gear we got at the yard sales, the incredible home made mac 'n cheese my professionally-trained brother-in-law made for us, I am having a stupendous day.
And so I go...

ok - so i was one of your roommates junior year, right???? how do i not remember living with a turtle? i would swear you never had a turtle except for the fact that as i read more and more of this post - Gamera sounded familiar and fuzzy memories started coming back to me. wow - i've had a turtle as a roommate...you learn something new about yourself everyday....
You had a turtle...? In PW....? No memories of it - I think we spent too much time at the Body Bag :)
Hey Sugarmouth,
Happy Mother's Day.
Your blog-friend,
Ed
I think B and I were the only ones who were really into Gamera the flying turtle. I witnessed the dropping of Gamera and the reappearance of his little head and limbs from inside the shell after about two weeks. I, too, thought you killed the turtle. I'm glad to hear the revision of history provided by Meg. Gamera's stay in PW coincided with the Chia-Head.
By the way, Ed, you're my favorite of Sugarmouth's new blog friends.
Such an honor! Thank you, niebler. Two questions come immediately to mind, though. (1) Am I the ONLY new blog friend - which would only slightly tinge the honor of having been mentioned at all, and (2) are you in any of the pictures from Brigitapalooza, and if so which of the cast are you?
Hope those questions are not too personal, and apologies to Sugarmouth/Brigita for temporarily highjacking her blog comments section. :)
You wil now be returned to your regularly-scheduled blog posting...
mmmmm... home made mac'n cheese....
I, too, am shocked at the revelation that, for a time, one of our fellow Weasels was in fact a turtle. Nice work!
You know, it is very possible I hallucinated the whole turtle episode, except Niebler can vouch for the reptile's presence, so hopefully I'm not totally bats...
How on earth did I keep that one on the DL?
Thanks for the well-wishes, Ed. While you may be one of the few new blog-friends, you can still take the title of best. :)
Yikes. Niebs is your only alibi. Not a strong position to hold.
